Tomato is a sweet, juicy, and a delicious fruit - though it is used as a vegetable. Tomato is a great source of fibre. About a 100 gram of tomato has two grams of fibre - this is about 7% of the daily recommended value. So, tomatoes aid digestion. Needless to say tomato’s red color indicates the presence of beta carotene. (It must be noted that there are tomato variants that come in yellow and a few other colors.) The presence of beta carotene and lycopene in tomato protects our skin from ultraviolet damage. Tomato also has trace elements such as potassium, chromium, iron, magnesium, choline, zinc, and phosphorous. It also has vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K. Vitamin A is good for eyesight. Regular consumption of vitamin A stos macular degeneration and night blindness. Calcium present in tomato makes our bones strong. The potassium in tomato lowers blood pressure and cholesterol. Chromium of tomato regulates blood sugar and hence, tomato is good for diabetic patients. But tomato has malic and citric acid - too much of tomato can make our body acidic.
