    Spread in an area of 55 square kilometers and located nearly 1066 meters above sea level, The Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is a home of fascinating mix of diverse species of flora and fauna. The forest zone of Peppara is located within the catchment area of Peppara Dam, standing across Karmana River and is rich thicket of three types of forests-tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and moist mixed deciduous. Harboring many species of exotic birds such as Malabar Grey Hornbill, White bellied Treepie, Small Sunbird, the park is a also a natural habitat of animals like Lion Tailed macaque, Wild Dog, Panther, Elephant Tiger, Langur and Wild Boar as well as many of the reptiles, fishes and amphibians. Situated just 50 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram, the sanctuary with a varied topography is a beautiful place to visit to witness the flourishing biodiversity and natural wealth of the area and makes a great weekend getaway. Ecological significance of Peppara wildlife sanctuary got it listed in the eco-tourism sites in Kerala. There are almost 13 tribal settlements in the sanctuary. These communities enjoy a peaceful existence in natural surroundings as they are quite protected by the sanctuary authorities. The wild species inhabiting the area are abundant in numbers making safari and other adventures thrilling. Peppara is home to 43 species of mammals, 233 species of birds, 46 species of reptiles, 13 species of amphibians and 27 species of fishes. It is especially attractive for birdwatchers and butterfly lovers. Birds and butterflies are easy to spot in some season. Watchtowers and guides help you spot the rare beauties. The landscape is exciting to explore. Treks requires prior permission form the Forest Department. Recently, a joint effort has been made by Kerala Tourism with the State Forest Department and the Kerala Water Authority to beautify the dam site and provide more entertainment and leisure facilities here. Eco tours to the area also cover the Ponmudi hill station, Lion Safari Park, Kallar, Anappara and Meenmutty waterfalls.
